Meet the creator of the ECSB!
David Webster graduated from Pillsbury Baptist Bible College with a B.A. with a major in Bible and a minor in history in 1967. He received his M. Div. at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Minneapolis in 1971. He then served for eight years as pastor of the Bible Baptist Church in central Wisconsin where a systematic reading and study of Scripture was the heart of his ministry. It was many mounting questions in this study of the Scriptures that drove him into seeking out what he came to see as the complete body of the Christian faith, the Catholic faith.
His own life long personal passionate love for and study of the Scriptures, however, and the majors in Bible required by both his Bible College and Seminary, his training in Biblical Greek and Hebrew, and the instructions and resources offered in these schools, refuting the liberal modernistic views of the origin of the Bible and its authenticity, laid the solid foundation for this monumental task of updating the Douay-Rheims and creating the Evangelical Catholic Study Bible which takes head-on the massive misinformation and distortions of the modernist editing throughout the New American Catholic Study Bible.
In addition to this massive Bible project in the last nine years, nearly on a full time basis, he has also been researching and writing extensively on post-Apostolic revelations to the Church, particularly the revelations given to the Italian mystic Maria Valtorta, which he considers the most important revelation Heaven has ever given to the Church since the close of the Biblical canon.
He founded Save Our Church, leading a group of the faithful to help expose a dissident group calling themselves “FutureChurch” (a local Chicago branch of Call to Action) in the Cleveland Diocese. He has led Marian Movement of Priest centicles and has spoken at the Miles Jesu, Path to Rome Conferences in Austria and Phoenix. He has appeared on the Coming home network at EWTN and with Sandy Timco on the Lumin Christi network.
David is married to his wife Cindy, whom he met in Bible College and is the Father of two wonderful daughters, who have all joined the Catholic Church. David and Cindy have three grandchildren, Augustine Gabriel, Autumn Elizabeth, and Galilee Laurel. He and his wife live in the Cleveland area. March 2009
The Ecumenical Vision for the Evangelical Catholic Study Bible
Meeting the Challenge of Unbelief and Secularism
Because of the consistency of the biblical witness, Evangelical Protestants and Catholics have traditionally held a firm agreement on every major theological issue. The divine Trinity, the reality of Satan, demons and angels, the Fall of Man, the Divinity of Christ, the need of faith in and submission to Christ the Son of God for Salvation, His literal Resurrection, the second coming of Christ, the coming of Anti-Christ, and the final judgment of all men, the reality of Heaven for the saved, of an eternal Hell for the lost have thus been the bedrock of orthodox faith.
The increasing loss of the certainty in our day among both Catholics and Protestants concerning these essential elements of faith however, must now be met with a fresh presentation of the evidence of their reasonableness and certainty. In light of the rising secularist threat against this faith that unites us in true Christian brotherhood, Protestants and Catholics must also honestly examine the issues that have created a tragic division between us and left us and the world so venerable to the Evil One. These issues have created more illusions of division than anything else. Misunderstandings created by differing definitions of redemptive terms have allowed the enemy to create the perception of serious irreconcilable theological conflict when in fact no important division exists. This honest re-evaluation has led Lutheran theologians, for instance, to recently admit there is no conflict between the “faith alone for salvation” view of traditional Lutheranism (and of all Protestant Evangelicalism today) and the Catholic view because the “faith alone” view does not exclude the human response to that faith that completes the salvation of the individual.
Besides promoting the certainty of these essential elements of faith that unite us, the purpose of the Evangelical Catholic Study Bible is to demonstrate that those matters where Catholicism goes beyond Protestant Evangelical thinking it does not at all conflict with any of these essential elements of faith. Our purpose is to show that these have only presented faulty perceptions of conflict not conflicts in reality. Protestants readers are challenged to determine for themselves, by the Biblical record alone, whether these “extra” Catholic insights to the Christian faith then are valid and whether they, as Catholics claim, actually enhance and support these essential elements of faith that unite us. We believe the Evangelical Catholic Study Bible will prove to be a significant catalyst for understanding and the eventual unity of all the faithful in Christ.
